I hurry out into the hall. Eva takes one look at me and asks, “What’s wrong? What did he say?”

“A lot of things; I’m in danger, the ones I love are in danger, we’re a bonded father-daughter set. A bunch of bullshit. What else is new?” I don’t mention the whole spying on my friends thing. It feels too yucky to even say it out loud.

“Think he’s full of crap?” she asks, as she escorts me back to the room where we left our belongings.

“I don’t know. He seems to believe everything he says,” I tell her. “But I learned in Faerieland that just because someone believes something to be true, doesn’t make it the truth.”

She nods, but then freezes mid head bob. “Hold up a sec. You went to Faerieland? When exactly was this?”

Oh balls. I can’t believe I let that slip.

“The other day.” I admit. “But just for a quick errand. In and out.”

“I want some Faerieland in and out!” Eva points a long red fingernail my way and I can’t help but flinch. But her tone is half joking, “Next time you are taking me with you or we will not be friends anymore.”

I shake my head and also take a tiny step back to put a bit more space between myself and Eva’s fingernails. “I don’t want to burst your bubble, but I am never going back to Faerieland. It was like a really bad drug trip.” I don’t add that over the course of the day I dealt with murderous mermaids, a truth potion, and overthrowing Oberon as King. Eva already has a gleam in her eye that definitely doesn’t ring of caution and care.

“I’m so jealous that you got to go to Faerieland...I would love to be a part of a Faerieland orgy,” she says wistfully.

“We all have to have dreams,” I say to her.

“Actually,” Eva says as she follows me out to the parking lot, “I like to call them sex goals.”

“Sure,” I say agreeably, because who am I to judge? “Whatever gets you off.”

“Speaking of goals...want to grab a drink for real?” Eva asks.

“No, she doesn’t,” comes a growly male voice. And then Nico stalks out from between a row of cars, blocking our path.

“Well, hello to you,” Eva says, going into full-on flirtation mode. She told me ages ago that getting Nico into her bed is on her bucket list. At the time, I laughed it off and wished her luck. Now, though, the sight of her red fingertips playfully brushing across Nico’s arm is enough to send a jolt of jealous rage through me.

“Back off,” I snap, the words coming from my mouth before I can call them back. What the hell?

Eva’s eyebrows go way up. “Woah.” She looks at me and then back to Nico. “Did I miss something here?”

Nico bares his teeth in a shit-eating grin. “Paige claimed me, in front of witnesses.”

“Wow,” Eva says, clearly impressed. “A straight-up werewolf claiming ceremony? That’s serious. I didn’t even know you two were dating.
